Upgrading to Webtrends Analytics 9.2a or 9.2b

For a successful upgrade, follow these steps exactly. It takes about four hours to upgrade from Webtrends Version 8.7d to 9.2.

Note:

You can upgrade to Webtrends Analytics 9.2 only from version 8.7d. If you are using an earlier version, you must first upgrade that version to 8.7d and then continue the upgrade to Analytics 9.2.

There is no upgrade path from 9.2a to 9.2b. Analytics 9.2b is functionally equivalent to 9.2a and includes localization support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Visit the Webtrends Software Center for more information.

Back Up the Webtrends Storage Folder

top

  1. Stop all running jobs.
  2. Stop all Webtrends services.
  3. Stop the Microsoft SQL database services.
  4. Back up the directories stored at Webtrends\Storage\.
Note: Profile backups can use a significant amount of storage space. If all profiles are in good working order and validated to meet the needs of the business users, it may not be necessary to copy and store them. If you decide that your organization does not need to store backups of all profiles, you can exclude the Webtrends\Storage\Backup directory. However you must back up all other directories such as Analysis, Reports, and Config.
  5. Restart all Microsoft SQL database and Webtrends services.

Back Up the wt_sched and wtmaster Databases

top

To back up the wt_sched and wtmaster databases, you can use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express, which is available from the Microsoft Download Center. This application provides a graphical user interface for performing database backups. Alternatively, you can run backups from the command line.

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express Backup

  1. Start Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Connect to the Webtrends Master database, typically named wtsystemdb. For authentication, use either the specific account credentials provided at the time the database was installed or use the Windows domain authentication.
  3. From the Object Explorer, expand the Databases directory, right-click wt_sched and select Tasks > Back Up . The Back Up Database dialog opens to the General page.
  4. Under the Source section, ensure the database is wt_sched and that the backup type is Full.
  5. Under Backup Set provide a name, description, and expiration date, as necessary.
  6. Under Destination, click Add and designate the file name and path to which the backup will be saved.
  7. (optional) If a backup already exists and is to be overwritten, open the Options page and select the Overwrite media option Overwrite all existing backup sets.
  8. Click OK.

Repeat the above steps for the wtMaster section of the database.

Command Line Backup

  1. Open a command line window.
  2. Navigate to the sqlcmd subdirectory in the Microsoft SQL Server installation directory. By default, sqlcmd is located in the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn for Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
  3. Type the following. Note that <pathname> represents the fully qualified path to the directory where the backup will be created.
    - SQLCMD
    - BACKUP DATABASE wt_sched
    - TO DISK = '<pathname>\wt_sched.bak'
    - WITH FORMAT;
    - GO

    - SQLCMD
    - BACKUP DATABASE wtMaster
    - TO DISK = '<pathname>\wtMaster.bak'
    - WITH FORMAT;
    - GO

Verify System Requirements

Verify that your installation meets the hardware and software requirements for Webtrends Analytics.

Verify the Server has Associated Applications and Roles Installed

top

Webtrends runs a user interface on IIS. IIS must be installed prior to installing Webtrends, or the install will fail. It is also recommended to disable the default web site before installing Webtrends. Webtrends Analytics 9.2 can only be installed on Windows Server 2008 64-bit OS; you need to be sure to have ASP.NET associated with the IIS meta base. To do this, run aspnet_iisreg.exe /i from a command prompt after installing the .NET 3.5 SP1 framework or the installer will fail with errors creating the web site.

  1. Install .NET 3.5 SP1.
  2. Install Windows installer 4.5.
  3. Install IIS7.
  4. Add Roles and Features to your Windows 2008 server and patches to O.S.
  5. Add Roles.
  6. Add Service Accounts.
  7. Run Windows Update to get the latest patches.

Turn off User Account Control (UAC)

top

Note: User Account Control must be disabled to install Webtrends Analytics. If you do not disable UAC, the installation fails and returns an error code (1001, 1603) or a message about account restrictions.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts.
  3. Click User Accounts.
  4. Click Change User Account Control Settings.
  5. Drag the slider bar to Never Notify.

  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart the computer. A prompt to restart appears briefly and then disappears. If you miss the prompt, use the menu to restart the computer.
Note: After changing these settings, the computer must be restarted before you start the Webtrends installer.
  8. Run Windows Update to get the latest patches for the installed components.

Stop all Webtrends Services Except the Microsoft SQL Server Service

top

  1. Click Start > Administrative Tools > Services .
  2. From the Services console, stop the services below in the order in which they are given.

    6. Webtrends – Email Notification Service
    7. Webtrends – System Monitor
    8. Webtrends – Data Extraction Retention Service
    9. Webtrends – UI Web Services

Run the Webtrends Analytics Installer

top

  1. Log in as the Service Account user created in Add Service Accounts.
  2. Create a location for the storage folder.
Note: All report and analysis data is kept in this folder, so it should be backed up regularly. Depending on usage, this folder can grow very large, and should exist on a disk with ample capacity.
    1. Create a new folder named storage on the destination drive.
    2. Share the folder, giving read/write access in the Sharing tab to the user configured in the earlier steps, and full control to the user in the Security tab.
  3. Right-click on the installation file and select Run as administrator.
  4. Unzip the file.

    The setup process launches.

Note: If you are installing Analytics 9.2b, you must run the installer from a command line. Open a Command Prompt window and locate the Webtrends Setup directory you created in the previous step. Run the following command: setup.exe SKIP_BETAS.
  5. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
  6. Choose the installation folder and click Next.
    • If you are adding features to a distributed architecture, provide the host, instance and port of the SQL database.
Note: The instance name of a new install is typically wtsystemdb.
    • For a standard install, leave the Port field blank.
  7. Select Starting a new installation.
  8. Select the components to install. A typical install includes:
    • Webtrends Master Database
    • Reporting and Administration
    • Standard Analysis Engine
    • GeoTrends Data File
  9. Click Next.

  11. Click Next to accept the default Single User Account
  12. Enter the username, password and domain of the service account user configured in the earlier steps and click Next.
  13. In the Webtrends Data Storage Locations dialog, change each entry to use the shared storage folder name, substituting the local directory and folder with the share name. For example, change:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Webtrends\storage\analysis to \\mymachine\storage\analysis
  14. Select the port you want to use for the user interface (if other than the default 7099).
  15. If you haven't downloaded the GeoTrends data file, click Download GeoTrends and follow the instructions on the website. When the download completes, return to the installer, click Browse and navigate to the file you just downloaded.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Install.

When the installation finishes the base Webtrends installation is complete, including these components: Webtrends Master Database, Reporting and Administration, Standard Analysis Engine, and the GeoTrends Data File.
