Test States

Use the status of a test and its display options to determine when and how a test page appears to visitors.

Change a Test State

  1. From the navigation menu, click Laboratory.
  2. Double-click a project from the list and then select a test from the list that appears. Information about the test appears to the right of the list.
  3. Click the link to the current test state. Select a different test state and a new display option, if needed.

Test States

Value Description Page Display Options
Pending Test is waiting to be implemented; it is not available to site visitors. You can edit tests in a pending state. Default Content to new visitors only
Staging Test is available for validating in a browser without affecting normal traffic; it is not available to site visitors.

To view a test in a staging state, add the query string _wt.mode=staging to the test page URL. For example, http://www.example.com/page.htm?_wt.mode=staging

  • Default Content to new visitors only
  • Default Content to all visitors
  • Experiments to all visitors
Active Test is available to normal site traffic. Optimize begins tracking pages and rotating the factors it displays to visitors. Experiments to all visitors
Complete Test has completed testing, but is still active within Optimize. This state is typically used during final reporting and analysis. Data collection still occurs.

  • Default Content to all visitors
  • Specific experiment to all visitors
Archive Test is complete and tracking is disabled. The test is no longer available to visitors. The browser renders the page using its original HTML markup. Disabled

Page Display Options

Option Description
Default Content to new visitors only On the first visit to the test page, the visitor sees the default content and a cookie is set to display the same content on successive visits.
Default Content to all visitors On any visit to the test page, the visitor sees the default content.
Experiments to all visitors On a visit to the test page, the visitor sees content for normal test behavior. This is the same behavior for an Active test.
Specific experiment to all visitors On a visit to the test page, all visitors see the display that you selected from a list of available experiments.
