Creating a Test

This is the process for creating a new Test.

The site and page for which you are creating a Test must satisfy the necessary preconditions for Optimize (see Before You Use Optimize).
  1. Locate the New button on the Dashboard, and click it. Select Test.
  2. Enter the subject URL in the Page URL window. The URL may begin with the protocol (http), www, or the domain name. Optimize can resolve any URL that would resolve in a typical browser window to a site. Do not use a local URL or filename, such as “index.html.” These will not resolve.
  3. Click Next. Optimize retrieves a thumbnail of the page and asks for a Location Name.
  4. Provide a meaningful Location name and click Continue. Optimize displays a preview of the page.
  5. Move the cursor over the preview to highlight a selection to use as a test element. Click an element to choose it. A popup window will indicate the element's ID, and allow you to give it an informal name. In this window is also a small "up arrow" button. Clicking this button selects the parent of the selected item. Name the element and click Continue, or click Select New to choose a different element on the page.

  6. The Control Variation
Optimize creates a Control Variation based on the existing content.
  7. Build one or more Variations of the element. Repeat these steps until you’ve built every Variation you need.
    1. Click + Variation
    2. Click Customize content.
    3. The default content of the new Variation is a copy of the Control Variation's content. Change the content of the element, styling it as needed, using the rich text editing window.
      Content editing window
    4. Click Done to accept the changes or Reset Element to change it back to the default setting.
    5. Create a meaningful name for the Variation.
    6. Click Save to save the new Variation, or Cancel.
    7. Repeat this sequence if you want to add more Variations.
  8. Build one or more Conversion Events. A defined Conversion Event is how Optimize knows that something special has happened on the web page. A Conversion Event might be clicking "put in Cart" on a product page, or "Check out now" on a cart-review page. Add as many Conversion Events as you need.
    1. Click + Conversion.
    2. Select the element on the page (such as an ad, or image) that, when clicked, triggers the Conversion Event.
    3. In the popup window, name the click trigger (for example: "Scooter ad").
    4. Click Continue to accept the element, or Select New to pick a different one.
    5. The Value Per Event is an arbitrary monetary value assigned to this Conversion. Although it's optional, it represents the closest way of definitively measuring lift. Select the preferred units and enter a value.
    6. Give the conversion a meaningful name (for example: "user clicks scooter ad")
    7. Click Save to save this Conversion Event or Cancel to cancel this Conversion Event.
    8. Repeat this sequence if you want to add more Conversion Events.
  9. Give the Test a meaningful name (for example: "Checking Banner Ads").
  10. Click Save to save the new Test, or Cancel to cancel the new Test.
  11. At this point, the new Test is staged. You may run it, edit it, or share preview links of each variation. Note that if the preview links do not produce the proper Variations, then confirm the site has been properly prepared for Optimize.
