Installing Webtrends Analytics 9.2a or 9.2b

For a successful installation, follow these steps exactly. It takes about an hour to install Webtrends.

The Analytics 9.2b release is the preferred version for all installations for all languages. It includes localization support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Otherwise, Analytics 9.2b is functionally equivalent to 9.2a. Visit the Webtrends Software Center for more information.

For Analytics 9.2b and prior versions, you need a valid license key. Before you start, back up your system.

Installation Overview

The following is a list of tasks for the installation. You can perform the initial procedures in any order; however, you must complete them all before you run the installer.

Note: If your environment requires a "hardened" server configuration for maximum security, you should implement the security hardening measures after the installation is complete.

Add Roles top

  1. Start the Server Manager.
  2. Click Roles and select Add Roles. (Click Next in the Before You Begin dialog if it appears.)
  3. In the Select Server Roles dialog, add Application Server and Web Server (IIS), adding any required features if prompted, and click Next.

  4. Click Next on the Application Server dialog.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Add the Application Server Role Service Web Server (IIS) Support, adding any required features if prompted.
  7. Add Message Queuing Activation under the Windows Process Activation Service Support, adding any required features if prompted, and click Next.

  8. Click Next in the Web Server (IIS) dialog.
  9. Scroll down in the role services dialog and add IIS 6 Management Compatibility (subcomponents are automatically selected), adding any required features if prompted.

  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Install.

After a few minutes, the Installation Results screen appears.

  12. Click Close.

Add Service Accounts top

Note: Webtrends requires a domain account to run services. Local accounts do not allow installation of Webtrends on any distributed machines, which includes additional options such as analysis machines, Insight, Realtime Engine, etc.
  1. Open the local security policies: Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy.

The Local Security Policy window opens.

  2. Navigate to Local Policies > User Rights Assignment .
  3. Add the service account to the following local security policies (regardless of whether the user already belongs to existing groups in these policies).
    • Act as part of the operating system
    • Allow log on locally
    • Debug programs
    • Log on as a service
  4. Add the service account to the Local Administrators group:
    1. Open the Server Manager.
    2. Navigate to Local Users and Groups/Groups.
    3. Add the service account to the Administrators group.

Turn off User Account Control (UAC) top

Note: User Account Control must be disabled to install Webtrends Analytics. If you do not disable UAC, the installation fails and returns an error code (1001, 1603) or a message about account restrictions.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts.
  3. Click User Accounts.
  4. Click Change User Account Control Settings.
  5. Drag the slider bar to Never Notify.

  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart the computer. A prompt to restart appears briefly and then disappears. If you miss the prompt, use the menu to restart the computer.
Note: After changing these settings, the computer must be restarted before you start the Webtrends installer.
  8. Run Windows Update to get the latest patches for the installed components.

Run the Analytics Installer top

  1. Log in as the Service Account user created in Add Service Accounts.
  2. Create a location for the storage folder.
Note: All report and analysis data is kept in this folder, so it should be backed up regularly. Depending on usage, this folder can grow very large, and should exist on a disk with ample capacity.
    1. Create a new folder named storage on the destination drive.
    2. Share the folder, giving read/write access in the Sharing tab to the user configured in the earlier steps, and full control to the user in the Security tab.
  3. Right-click on the installation file and select Run as administrator.
  4. Unzip the file.

    The setup process launches.

Note: If you are installing Analytics 9.2b, you must run the installer from a command line. Open a Command Prompt window and locate the Webtrends Setup directory you created in the previous step. Run the following command: setup.exe SKIP_BETAS.
  5. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
  6. Choose the installation folder and click Next.
    • If you are adding features to a distributed architecture, provide the host, instance and port of the SQL database.
Note: The instance name of a new install is typically wtsystemdb.
    • For a standard install, leave the Port field blank.
  7. Select Starting a new installation.
  8. Select the components to install. A typical install includes:
    • Webtrends Master Database
    • Reporting and Administration
    • Standard Analysis Engine
    • GeoTrends Data File
  9. Click Next.
  10. Select Install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and click Next.
Note: It is unnecessary to use a SQL instance other than the one included in the install; SQL Express Edition is more than sufficient to handle the requirements of the system.
  11. Click Next to accept the default Single User Account
  12. Enter the username, password and domain of the service account user configured in the earlier steps and click Next.
  13. In the Webtrends Data Storage Locations dialog, change each entry to use the shared storage folder name, substituting the local directory and folder with the share name. For example, change:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Webtrends\storage\analysis to \\mymachine\storage\analysis
  14. Select the port you want to use for the user interface (if other than the default 7099).
  15. If you haven't downloaded the GeoTrends data file, click Download GeoTrends and follow the instructions on the website. When the download completes, return to the installer, click Browse and navigate to the file you just downloaded.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Install.

When the installation finishes the base Webtrends installation is complete, including these components: Webtrends Master Database, Reporting and Administration, Standard Analysis Engine, and the GeoTrends Data File. You can install additional components on your other Webtrends-designated computers in any order.

  18. Validate the installation:
    1. Click the Webtrends On Premises desktop icon. The login dialog opens.
    2. Type the installing user name and password and click Log in. If you did not provide licensing information during the installation, you are prompted to activate your license.
  19. Implement Webtrends:
    1. Create one or more data sources as described in Understanding Data Sources.
    2. Create one or more profiles as described in Creating Webtrends Analytics Profiles.
    3. Configure session tracking as described in Tracking Visitor Sessions.
    4. Provision user accounts as described in Setting Up Webtrends Users and Roles.
    5. Review security settings to ensure that they are aligned with your security policy and make any needed adjustments.
    6. If you installed Insight, restart the Reporting and Administration UI to make the link to Insight visible.
    7. Enable User Account Control (it must be disabled for installation).
